WINEMAKER
NOTES
The 1999 growing season was cool throughout the state. This allowed
the grapes to enjoy a longer than average "hang time" on the vines,
which increases flavor development and complexity in the fruit.
In addition, the relatively low yield from this vintage resulted
in exceptional quality and excellent flavor intensity.
Crisp
acidity combined with delicate fruit flavors and a touch of residual
sugar are the hallmarks of Fetzer Gewürztraminer. These qualities
are complemented by forward floral aromas and richness attributed
to the addition of Muscat fruit.
The
wine is deep golden straw colored, with a nose of dried apricot,
spicy peach, a touch of rose petal, and honey. In the mouth, crisp
green apple, honeyed apricot, and mango flavors meld with the traditional
spicy flavors of Gewürztraminer. This medium-bodied wine's off-dry
style strikes the perfect balance between its sweetness and bright,
crisp acidity.
GRAPE
SOURCING
The fruit for this wine was sourced primarily from Monterey, Mendocino,
and Sonoma counties. The grapes were harvested through mid October,
at an average sugar of 22.4° Brix. Approximately 13% Muscat was
added to the blend to add further complexity and aromas.
FOOD
RECOMMENDATIONS
The 1999 Fetzer Gewürztraminer is a versatile wine that pairs well
with many spicy Asian ethnic dishes. This wine is also a mainstay
of the holiday dinner table, whether it features Thanksgiving turkey
or Easter ham. Try it with fish or other poultry in which citrus
is the base sauce. It's also great with any smoked picnic meats.
AGING
To fully capture the delicate fruity and floral components
of this wine, the winemaking team chose to cold ferment in temperature-controlled
stainless steel.
